Topic
:              Makeovers for Job Interviews.

Introduction
:

When applying for jobs, first impressions count. The subject, Personal Presentation Skills covers aspects of Grooming – hair / make up / apparel / accessories and Deportment.

In this task three other class members will join you in devising a makeover suitable for a job interview. As a group you will present a brochure and a ten-minute presentation on your findings. Be creative and have fun

The Task:

Oprah Winfrey is doing a series of segments on Job Searching. In segment two she has employed your group ‘Expert Makeovers’ to assist in the preparation of a makeover for a thirty-something year old female job seeker. Oprah has suggested that a brochure on how and what you did be made available to the studio audience. She also wants your group to appear on her show to explain the process of your decisions.

Several women from various occupations have volunteered for the makeover. They are the Administrative Assistant, the Child-Care Worker, the Waiter, the Accountant, the Nurse and the Sales Assistant. Oprah has allowed your group to choose the job seeker that you would like to makeover but has stipulated that hair, make-up, apparel & accessories must be suitable for the occupation that the woman is seeking. Therefore you will need to have a clear understanding of the job descriptions of the occupations of these women.

The Process:

Your group will comprise of four class members.

1.   First you should examine  Oprah’s Expectations, which is what you will be evaluated on. As you partake in the following tasks you should ensure that you are covering the assessment requirements.

2
.   Next, individually you will be required to research the occupations of the job seekers. To do this you will need to  complete the  Job Description forms for each occupation. You are to access the sites that relate to the job seekers using the links below. Your  teacher will give you copies of all the forms required for this WebQuest.

The Nurse

The Administrative Assistant
The Child Care Worker

The Waiter
The Accountant

The Sales Assistant

3
.      You will take your individual research findings back to the group. As a group you are to discuss your findings and decide on one Job Seeker. You are then to complete one copy of the  Group Decision Job Seeker form, which details reasons why as a group you chose the above Job Seeker.

4.
Next, you are to decide which of the four ‘Expert’ roles you would like to take on, you will then need to read what these roles entail.

5
. Using the Makeover forms, you are to create the makeover for your job seeker  accessing the following sites from The Gallery of Makeovers. You should also access the most popular  search engines for more information

6. It is time to come together to create your brochure and presentation. It may be a good idea to review the
evaluation at this stage to make sure you are on the right track.

7.  Collate your ‘expert makeover’ findings with the group and relate them to the occupation of the job seeker. You may create your brochure anyway you desire using your preferred desktop publishing program. Examples are Aldus PageMaker, MS-Publisher, QuarkXpress and Printshop Deluxe.  Be creative and colourful in the designing of your brochure. Remember, this brochure is about Makeovers and they are bright and colourful!

Your brochure must contain:

  • An introduction outlining your group’s decision on the job seeker chosen.
  • A brief summary of the personal requirements for the applicant and the task requirements of the occupation.
  • The four ‘experts’ findings on Hair, Make-up, Apparel & Accessories.
  • An explanation of how the Makeover is suited to the Job Seeker in relation to her occupation.

8. Once you have created your brochure you will need to practice for your ten-minute presentation. A delegated spokesperson will need to explain why you chose the job seeker using the  Group Decision Job Seeker formHowever, each expert will be expected to explain in detail their choices in hair, make-up, apparel & accessories in relation to the occupation of the Job Seeker.

As a Make-up Artist to celebrities, you have the ability to completely makeover a person’s looks.  However, in this task you will need to take care that you don’t overdo it. The job seeker will need to be able to replicate your artistry with ease and confidence. The make-up while highlighting her best features should be appropriate to the occupation of the job seeker.
